| Full jail leads to more bail |

CANADA - B.C. officials are heading for Ottawa next week to press for change to the practice of giving accused criminals double credit for time spent in jail awaiting trial. Premier Gordon Campbell said the battle against crime gangs that are shooting up B.C. communities needs not just more police and prosecutors, it needs changes to federal regulations regarding remand. Prisoners held in jail awaiting trial typically get two days credit for each day served once they are convicted. B.C. has complained for years that the practice by federally appointed judges is exploited by criminals and their defence lawyers, who maximize "remand" time to shorten sentences when they know they are likely to be convicted. "What we're saying is, if you're caught on bail and you've got a gun, it should be one for one," Campbell said. "There should be no remand credit whatsoever." Police also need updated federal legislation on wiretaps to help collect evidence on organized crime gangs, Campbell said.
