MAINE - The Legislature's Appropriations Committee continued hearings today on Gov. John Baldacci proposed $6.1 billion, two-year budget. One of the more controversial proposals in the bill affects the corrections department where nearly 40 workers would lose their jobs. Corrections Commissioner Marty Magnusson says his department would save nearly $6 million over the budget cycle by transferring some prisoners to county facilities and others out of state. But lawmakers were told that some of those savings could carry a higher cost. By closing prison units and transferring prisoners, Magnusson will no longer need as many [officers] and staff workers. But, he says, a smaller inmate population and work force does not mean better days for the Corrections Department. "When we close two exceptional pre-release transition units and have a backlog in our medium and close facilities, that doesn't create a better system. When we close a unit at Down East where all the people are going out on restitution and firefighting, that doesn't create a better system there." Read more.
