| Fewer inmates, more judges |

NEW HAMPSHIRE - Governor John Lynch’s Thursday budget proposal includes across-the-board cuts to “lower the state’s cost structure,” including cuts to the judicial and corrections departments. With some of the savings, seven vacant judges positions could be filled, said the governor. Recommended reductions include closing courthouses, incarcerating fewer offenders by putting more under electronic surveillance, expediting deportation of illegal aliens and/or transferring prisoners out-of-state and building a new regional jail. The governor’s press secretary, Colin Manning, said the seven district courthouses on the chopping block are; Hillsborough, New London, Plaistow, Claremont, Milford, Hooksett, Keene and Colebrook. On the Seacoast, Durham District Court was consolidated with Dover’s, effective Feb. 3. The governor’s budget address included his recommendation that more “non-violent offenders” be monitored by electronic surveillance and fewer sent to jails. Cost savings would be realized by monitoring offenders electronically for $7 a day, versus almost $100 a day for incarceration, he said. Read more.
