| Corrections agencies wonder what’s next |

MICHIGAN - After Gov. Jennifer Granholm announced her proposed budget and changes to the Department of Corrections Thursday, area agencies wondered how they may be impacted by the possible changes. The proposed budget calls for a 3-percent reduction in general fund spending by the Michigan Department of Corrections statewide. Granholm called for about $180 in savings by closing of several prisons and the Marquette crime lab, releasing prisoners which would also mean less need for as many state corrections officers. About $60 million would be spent on hiring more parole officers in communities, monitoring technology for those released from prison, re-entry services and conversion costs for housing mentally ill offenders.
