Prison officials predict more inmates

PIERRE — South Dakota's prison population, nearly flat for three years, is beginning to grow again. Corrections Department officials told state lawmakers during budget hearings that they anticipate about a 3 percent increase in the number of male prison inmates and 5 percent growth in female inmates between now and the end of 2010. That comes after three years in which the average daily population in the state's adult prison system was essentially stable, Chief Warden Doug Weber told the Joint Appropriations Committee. "Counts are pretty good news for the department," Weber said. "We've been fairly flat, which is good for us as a department and for the state." He said department staffers who track and predict inmate populations have been close to actual numbers of the past several years. Between 1998 and 2006, Corrections Department records show the average daily count in the adult prisons grew steadily, from 2,267 to 3,428. During that period, the state added space for 192 maximum-security inmates at the Sioux Falls penitentiary. Additional space at Mike Durfee State Prison at Springfield was build to house up to 400 inmates classified as low-medium security. Read more.
