| CA Senate Fails; 20,000 Layoffs |

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Layoff notices are expected to go out to 20,000 California state workers Tuesday morning, after the California Senate failed to pass a budget. Aaron McClear, spokesman for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, announced Monday afternoon that the governor would issue the layoffs if lawmakers couldn't pass a combination of spending cuts, tax hikes and additional borrowing negotiated by Schwarzenegger and party leaders. The notices will start going out to the least-senior workers in corrections, health and human services and other agencies that receive money from the general fund. Read more.
