Manchin: Uniform discipline at jails

Governor acknowledges concerns of lawmakers - Not all the facts are in on mistaken releases that led to a recent shakeup at Southern Regional Jail, but Gov. Joe Manchin says he wants to look at policy so discipline is administered uniformly across the 10-jail system. Attention has been riveted on the Beckley area facility by a legislative interims panel since Administrator Tom Scott and four officers were handed pink slips when the wrong inmates were set free. Manchin lauded Regional Jail Director Terry Miller for doing “a great job setting policy, looking at what didn’t work and trying to fix things that should be fixed.” Yet, the Oversight Committee on Regional Jail and Correctional Facility Authority in recent months has examined reports that errant releases occurred in the past and those responsible were merely suspended for two days. Manchin acknowledged the concerns voiced in recent weeks, notably by Delegate Dave Perry, D-Fayette, a co-chair of the interims panel, and Sen. Mike Green, D-Raleigh. Read more.
