Budget Battle Hits Sheriff's Office

You don't say no to Sheriff Simon Leis. That's a lesson many Hamilton County officials have learned over his nearly four decades in elected office. But two county commissioners have done just that. They said "No" to the sheriff's pleas for emergency funding. Sheriff: "I'm laying off 178, 180 people. Okay?" Sheriff Simon Leis is the most feared and revered politician in Hamilton County, wielding absolute control over the Sheriff's Office and its multi-million dollar budget. County Commissioner Greg Hartmann said, "That's not an argument. Where we do have an argument though, he's made decisions in his budget to not fund these things we're talking about – road patrols in Western Hamilton County, and enough corrections officers to make the jails safe." "So, if he's saying lives are at risk, then I don't think he's filling his commitment then," said Hartmann. Hartmann sent a letter to Sheriff Leis refusing to give one cent of the county's reserve fund to plug holes in the sheriff's budget. "We can't use it to fund what the sheriff's asked for and unfortunately, we've had to tell him that three times," said Hartmann. According to the sheriff, "It's been heart-wrenching." Last week the sheriff pleaded with commissioners to dip into the county's reserve fund, stating that, "The dangers to my officers in the jail and on the road are increasing dramatically." Read more.
