| Wis. budget calls for earlier release for inmates |

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Gov. Jim Doyle wants to let some felons out of prison earlier to save money. The budget plan he introduced Wednesday calls for sweeping changes in Wisconsin prison policy. One is putting inmates on a fast-track to parole. Inmates who committed nonviolent felonies such as dealing drugs could earn a "positive adjustment" day for every two days of good behavior in prison. Their time behind bars would be cut by the number of positive adjustment days they earn, making them eligible for parole that much sooner. Inmates who commit violent but lesser felonies would get a positive adjustment day for every three days of good behavior.
