| Corrections officers cited for bravery |

A national corrections officer association has recognized two Monmouth County Jail guards for bravery for their response to an escape attempt and attack on another officer by a violent career criminal. Officers Anthony Valasa and Anthony Sanchez came to the aid of the third officer, John Poplawski, in the incident last November, saving Poplawski "from significant injury or death," according to Corrections USA in a prepared statement announcing presentation of its annual Valor Awards. Monmouth County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Cynthia Scott said Poplawski suffered a broken orbital bone, a dislocated shoulder and has undergone several surgeries. Poplawski, who has been a corrections officer since 1996, remains out of work on disability leave. Scott said Poplawski has been nominated by Warden William F. Fraser for recognition from the 200 Club of Monmouth County, a nonprofit group that provides financial assistance and other support to families of fallen public safety and rescue personnel.
