| Court budget woes continue |

Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Marsha Ternus will provide an update this afternoon at the judicial branch office in Des Moines regarding the judicial budget and the ramifications of Gov. Chet Culver's proposed budget cuts. Subsequently, State Court Administrator David Boyd will offer information on a range of possible actions for reducing the expenses for fiscal year 2010 and beyond, which may include possible layoffs, cuts to or the elimination of the senior judge program, merging court offices and additional court personnel furloughs. Court officials also are mulling a voluntary furlough on judges. The Supreme Court relies on the volunteerism on the part of the judges because judges' and magistrates' salaries are set by the Legislature and handled separately. Among the options the high court is considering with regards to budget cuts for fiscal year 2010 are reducing non-personnel costs, the reduction of travel, temporary and permanent layoffs and the switch to electronic equipment to record court proceedings. Steve Davis, a supreme court communications officer, said Boyd reports that several judges have indicated a willingness to participate in furloughs. Read more.
