They maintain that the 120-bed center enhances public safety because felons who live there while on probation are under intense supervision. They say the center gives offenders a better chance of success than if they had been sent to prison. But the center could close under a proposed state budget cut of $1.2 million, they say. The Kansas Department of Corrections has proposed eliminating funding that provides nearly half of the annual budget for the Sedgwick County Community Corrections Residential and Service Center, on the northeast corner of Central and St. Francis. Without the state share, the center might have to close, said Sedgwick County Department of Corrections Director Mark Masterson. Read more.
