| 5 correctional officers assaulted at ACI |

A captain and four correctional officers suffered minor injuries during an altercation with an inmate last night at the Adult Correctional Institutions' Intake Service Center. Around 6 p.m. yesterday, Mattheu Mayberry, 34, got into an argument with an officer after he was seen passing contraband to another inmate, said Tracey E. Zeckhausen, spokeswoman for the state Department of Corrections. The argument was reported to the captain, who ordered the inmate be placed into segregation. But when it came time for the inmate to go, he fought back, said Robert C. Miller, first vice president of the Rhode Island Brotherhood of Correctional Officers. "The captain told him he was going to be moved, he decided he didn't want to go," Miller said. "He rushed all of them, the captain and the officers. They got control of him and moved him to segregation." The officers and Mayberry sustained minor injuries and were treated at an outside medical facility. One officer was severely bitten on his finger, and most sustained bumps and bruises, Miller said. He expects all of the officers to return to work by Monday. Mayberry, who had been in intake since Jan. 9 on a robbery charge, was transferred to segregation at the ACI High Security Center, Zeckhausen said. According to the courts online records database, Mayberry was arrested by the Burrillville Police Department and charged with first degree robbery, assault with the intent to commit specified felonies and felony conspiracy. The ACI's Office of Internal Affairs is looking into the incident, Zeckhausen said, and the state police are investigating to determine whether to pursue additional charges against Mayberry.
