CRANSTON — Nineteen correctional officers and investigators who worked to crack a prison smuggling ring last fall and a correctional officer who helped pull a man from a burning car in a 2007 auto accident were among the 30 people the Department of Corrections honored at its annual awards ceremony Thursday. The group of 19 that received the Teamwork Award included staff at the Adult Correctional Institutions minimum and medium security facilities and the Special Investigations unit. They worked on a contraband smuggling case that led to several inmates being charged, disciplined or transferred, Corrections Director A.T. Wall said. Capt. Frederick Haibon received the Distinguished Service Award. He and another man rushed to a burning car on Route 295 in October 2007 and removed the driver and his 11-year-old daughter. The daughter survived, but her father died from his injuries. Other award winners were Scott Tirocchi, for helping to prepare inmates for release; Susan Heffner for her work on inmate mental-health services; and Karen Zambarano for work in labor relations and policy planning. Abboud Saggal was Correctional Officer of the Year; Capt. Jeff Aceto was Supervisor of the Year, and correctional officer Scott Rafferty was cited for his fast reaction to a medical emergency.
