An inmate was mistakenly released from a state prison Friday and taken back into custody the next afternoon in Wilmington's Rodney Square, officials said. Advertisement Charles H. Thomas, 40, was accidentally set free because his name is similar to that of another prisoner who was due to be released at Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington, said John Painter of the Delaware Department of Correction. Thomas, who was awaiting court action on multiple felony charges, was arrested Saturday by Wilmington and state police as well as the department's Correctional Emergency Response Team. "Through a successful collaboration of agencies, this situation has fortunately been resolved," prison Commissioner Carl Danberg said. Thomas is one of at least 30 inmates who were mistakenly released by the Department of Correction in the last two years, officials said. He was being held for defaulting on $108,000 bail on charges that include carrying a deadly weapon, first-degree attempted robbery and possession of a firearm during a felony. Thomas was set free because he and the other inmate have the same first and last names but different middle initials, Danberg said. "The middle initial was off," he said, "and the staff selected the wrong one." Danberg said this type of mistake is unusual. There also are multiple checks in the release process and staffers should have identified Thomas as the wrong inmate to be released, he said. The mistake was discovered less than an hour after Thomas was set free about 2:45 p.m. Friday. A records clerk caught the error while entering information on Thomas into a computer. Read more.
