SPEIGNER, Alabama -- A corrections officer making rounds last week in one of Elmore Correctional Center's open dormitories spotted an inmate in bed chatting away on a cell phone. If it had been a college dorm -- no problem. But in prison, cell phones are off-limits. In a scene that corrections officials say is becoming increasingly familiar, the officer chased the inmate, caught him and took away the phone. Drugs and shanks are still around, but cell phones are the new contraband of choice in many federal and state prisons in Alabama and across the country. Inmates use the phones to continue conducting criminal enterprises or to stay in touch with family and friends, prison officials say. But chatter causes problems in the lockup. "It is a security concern. We have an agencywide prohibition against cell phones and we have security measures to prevent them from coming in," said Charles Sansum, spokesman at the Federal Correctional Institution at Talladega. "In a prison setting, we want to monitor the communication of inmates. It's hard to do that when they have cell phones." Inmates and their friends on the outside are crafty when it comes to getting the phones behind bars. Sometimes people throw them over fences, smuggle them in shaving cream cans or even hide them in body cavities. And if the price is right, some prison staffers will risk bringing in phones to inmates, prison officials say. Read more.
