| Inmates ‘chipped way’ through wall |

Inmates who escaped this morning from the Marion-Walthall Correctional Facility in Columbia “chipped their through way a solid block wall,” said Sheriff Berkley Hall. Advertisement Quantcast Hall believes the escapees used a part of a bed to form some of implement. “This didn’t just happen overnight,” he said. “This is something they’ve been working on.” The break was discovered about 5:40 a.m. and the sheriff believes the escape was between 3 and 4 a.m. Hall took office in January 2008. This is the second inmate escape he has dealt with. The first one came during his first weekend in office. “There will be an internal investigation. You learn from your mistakes,” he said. “They’re [prisoners] in there 24-7 to sit there and figure out a way to do it.” Meanwhile, troopers from the state Highway Patrol, officers from the Mississippi Department of Corrections and agents from the state Bureau of Investigation are swarming the scene and aiding in the investigation.
