A prisoner who was captured Sunday in Silt, Colo., after walking away from the Rifle Correctional Center had been denied parole once but was scheduled for another parole hearing later this year.
Robert Taylor, 42, left the minimum-security facility eight miles north of Rifle at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday. He was arrested at 12:40 p.m. by a Silt police officer and an investigator from the Colorado Department of Corrections Inspector General's Office.
DOC spokeswoman Linda Carroll said Taylor, as is customary with inmates, was wearing shoes with specially notched soles that can aid investigators in trying to track down an escaped convict.
"They were following his tracks. He was headed toward Silt. I believe they captured him as he came into the town," Carroll said.
Before Taylor's capture, the DOC had issued a news release offering up to $2,500 for information leading to his apprehension. Carroll noted that his lengthy criminal record includes robbery, forgery, motor vehicle theft, burglary and another jail escape in 1996 in Boulder County.
Taylor, a Colorado Springs native, also has a criminal record in Larimer, Adams and Jefferson counties, she said.
Taylor was transferred to Rifle in January 2003. Carroll said Taylor's estimated release date was February 2008, but he had been deemed parole-eligible last November. He was denied parole in November but had another hearing set for September, Carroll said.
Taylor will be sent to prison in Canon City where he will be placed in 23-hour lockdown, Carroll said.
