DOC Officer Saves Family

MANCHESTER, Conn. -- A Manchester family is being treated for carbon monoxide poisoning after their home's furnace malfunctioned Tuesday morning. Police said off-duty Department of Corrections officer Michael Nichols was driving down West Middle Turnpike when he saw smoke spilling from the basement vent of a home. "Looking at it first, you thought it was a fire, so cI called 911," he said. "I started banging on the doors." Nichols said he attempted to alert the residents and got no response. Click here to find out more! Fire crews said a married couple, 4-year-old child and 70-year-old were sleeping. Manchester Fire Chief Robert Bycholski said the home's furnace malfuncitoned and oil continued to burn, sending carbon monoxide throughout the house. "The readings we took in the basement, where the incident originated were over 1,000 parts-per-million -- that's tremendous," Bycholski said.
