Tighter security needed to combat prison suicides |

A spate of cell suicides has prompted the Connecticut prison system to order officers to check on inmates more frequently. Prison officers statewide have been ordered to increase the frequency of their tours of cell blocks. Correction officers are also being asked to be more diligent about monitoring inmates for signs of suicidal behavior. There were three suicides earlier last month in a two week period and last week another inmate attempted to kill himself. The inmate was found by prison staff around yesterday afternoon hanging in his cell at the Hartford Correctional Center. The inmate had tied one end of a torn bed sheet around his neck and the other end to his locker. The man was taken to Hartford Hospital. |
