| Crisis could force big cuts for public safety |

MEDFORD, Ore. - Public safety agencies are preparing for serious budget cuts following last week's dire news that the state deficit is larger than originally thought. Oregon legislators were informed Friday that the budget deficit has grown to $850 million for the current biennium and will top $2.5 billion for 2009-11. State Economist Tom Potiowsky predicted a decline of about $100 million more for the current biennium than his preliminary forecast last month. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office says state money pays the salaries of 24 employees, including 17 deputies in the county jail. Jackson County Sheriff Mike Winters says he could be forced to let people out of jail. "It's going to affect and devastate every county in the state of Oregon if they go down that road," says Winters. Sheriff's Offices are expected to find out within the next week exactly how much state money they will lose.
