Brevard County (Fla.) Sheriff Phil Williams has targeted two more supervisors for possible policy violations after an attempted suicide at the jail in Sharpes. Since December, five inmates have killed themselves in apparent suicides at the overcrowded and understaffed jail, and several others have tried. In the wake of the latest suicide attempt last Friday, the sheriff the following Saturday suspended Maj. Elizabeth Canada, the jail's third in command, and Lt. Terra Hudson while investigators look into the incident. Inmate Corey Lautkin, 19, was stopped before he hurt himself, jail administrator Greg Futch said. The two jail supervisors are being investigated by the sheriff's internal affairs office for possibly failing to promptly notify key investigative units, such as the major crimes division and the internal affairs office, about the incident. "I want to make it clear that our rank-and-file corrections officers are doing their jobs, but what I'm seeing is supervisors who are not adequately addressing issues as they come up," Williams said. "This was a crime scene Friday, and supervisors needed to treat it that way." So far, Williams, during the last few weeks, has targeted a total of five supervisors for possible policy violations. In addition to Canada and Hudson, the others are Sgt. Stephen Feaster, Sgt. Brian Seeley and Cpl. Frederick Abbey. Feaster, Seeley and Abbey were working as supervisors on March 21 when inmate William Gamez, 31, became the fifth apparent inmate suicide. They participated in a barbecue that day, which Williams believes might have prevented them from providing adequate supervision for their subordinates and inmates. Williams also is looking into whether jail records may have been altered on the day of the Gamez hanging. |
