Mart, TX- About 130 jobs will be eliminated from the McLennan County State Juvenile Correctional Facility in Mart after the Texas Youth Commission has a third round of staff reductions to respond to a drop in the number of youths incarcerated. The cut, announced today, will lay off 13 workers and the rest of the reduction will come from scrapping open positions at the facility, according to a press release. Jim Hurley, spokesman for TYC, said the cuts are mainly for case worker and administrative positions and will not eliminate corrections officers. Hurley did not know how many are employed overall at the Mart facility. Since Executive Commissioner Cherie Townsend took over TYC in October 2008, the agency has cut 720 positions statewide to match its decreasing youth population, reducing costs by $25 million. TYC’s youth population has significantly decreased since 2007 reforms to commit only youth who are the state’s most serious or chronic felony-level offenders, the press release stated. The reforms followed increased state scrutiny following allegations of sexual abuse of inmates in the TYC system. “While it is hard to take this action during these difficult economic times, it is imperative that we are good stewards of Texas taxpayers’ dollars and continue to build an agency that is effective and efficient,” Townsend said in a message to all TYC employees. “We are coming out of an extremely difficult period in our agency’s history, and I’m convinced that, as a result of the reforms we’ve undertaken, we will be better able to serve the youth in our system.
