| Inmate Dies in Jail |

An inmate at the Prince George's County jail died early this morning after he was found unresponsive in his cell, authorities said. Charles Cooper was found about 3:30 a.m., according to a statement issued by Maj. Andrew J. Ellis, a county police spokesman. Cooper was pronounced dead at a hospital about 5 a.m. There were no signs of foul play or trauma, Ellis said. The statement said Cooper was awaiting trial on felony charges. It did not give his age or specify the charges. Online court records indicate that a Charles Cooper is being held at the jail pending trial on attempted murder, assault and robbery charges. That defendant is 33, according to the records. The jail in Upper Marlboro has come under scrutiny since the death in June of a 19-year-old inmate who was accused of killing a police officer. The state medical examiner found that Ronnie L. White was asphyxiated and ruled the death a homicide. Sixteen inmates have died in custody at the jail in recent years, nearly half from homicides and suicides, The Washington Post reported in August. ad_icon The jail reported nine deaths from 2000 through 2005.
