BC - The provincial government has appointed a "public security commissioner" as part of its efforts to "increase focused attention on the issue of gangs, illicit drugs and gun violence in B.C.," 24 hours' Public Eye has learned. In an e-mail to colleagues, the premier's deputy minister Jessica McDonald announced solicitor general and public safety deputy minister David Morhart has been named to that position. He'll be replaced by forestry roundtable vice-chair and former British Columbia Lotteries Corp. chief executive officer Dana Hayden. The following is a complete copy of that email. Colleagues, Today I am pleased to announce that David Morhart has been appointed to a new role, Public Security Commissioner within the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General. As part of government’s efforts to increase focused attention on the issue of gangs, illicit drugs and gun violence in BC, the Commissioner will head up areas of the ministry directly related to this mandate, as well as working closely with the Deputy Attorney General to direct cooperation between police and prosecutors, and the remand and court system. In this role, David will be responsible for ensuring outcomes in the areas of policing, corrections, including custody and probation, dedicated crown prosecutors, civil forfeiture, and the Chief Firearms Officer. He will continue as Deputy Solicitor General, and will also directly assume the statutory role of Director of Police Services to facilitate the oversight of policing standards, policies, and training for the province. David has served as the Deputy Solicitor General since 2005 and is well positioned to address government’s commitment to target gang violence and organized crime. Read more.
