| EDCF East Unit suspends operation |

El Dorado, Kan. -Effective Feb. 27 the operations at the El Dorado Correctional Facility East Unit in Toronto will be suspended. “We anticipate everyone will be moved out by Friday,” said Dale Call, EDCF public information coordinator. The facility is working with the parks department and Call said the operations have merely been suspended. The facility isn’t completely shutting its doors. “If the facility can be reopened in the future we will,” said Call. Warden Ray Roberts recently released an update of the plans to suspend operations. In January, the Senate approved the Substitute for Senate Bill 23 with provisions that called for 1.5 percent in budget reductions for the current year. The Department of Corrections will need to cut about $4.1 million by July. The reductions are in addition to a 3 percent cut previously proposed by the governor’s budget. The final substitute bill passed includes a one percent reduction instead of 1.5 percent for 2009. A one percent reduction for the Department of Corrections equals approximately $2.7 million.
