DARTMOUTH, MA — A correctional officer at the Dartmouth House of Corrections was assaulted Thursday by an inmate who was reportedly angry that the officer had not allowed him to make a telephone call, officials said.
The inmate, Anthony Russ, allegedly punched the correctional officer in the back of the head while the officer was walking away, said Bristol County Sheriff Thomas M. Hodgson.
Officer Nelson Cabral, 26, fell down a flight of stairs and lost consciousness. Russ continued to attack Cabral until other correctional officers arrived and restrained him, Hodgson said.
Cabral was treated and released at St. Luke's Hospital. He sustained a concussion and bruises, and received stitches on his upper lip and chin. Hodgson said the officer was groggy, but recovering and will return to work when cleared by his doctor.
"Officer Cabral is a dedicated individual," Hodgson said. "He represents the kind of hard-working staff we have."
Meanwhile, Russ, 20, is currently awaiting trial for murder. He is charged with the July 2007 murder of an 18-year-old man in Hyannis. He has a lengthy criminal record that includes previous arrests for drug distribution, armed assault and witness intimidation.
He will be arraigned Friday in New Bedford District Court for assault and battery on a correctional officer. Hodgson said additional charges could be filed.
The assault today occurred at 11:30 a.m. while correctional officers were locking inmates into their cells for lunch. All the inmates complied with the protocol, except for Russ, who reportedly walked to a payphone in his cell block to make a call, Hodgson said. Read more.
