| Prisoners carve gateway for birds and school |

By PIPPA O'ROURKE - North Harbour News Seven inmates at Auckland prison have turned a dream of Albany High School students into reality. It was more than a year ago when the school spoke to Ngati Whatua senior kaumatua Des Ripi about their wish to plant trees for birds to land in during their migration from Tiritiri Matangi Island to Waitakere. They asked Mr Ripi how they could welcome birds into their school. A waharoa or gateway was his answer. "I talked it over with the school and the prison and the dream was on," says Mr Ripi. Working with the low-security inmates in the prison’s carving class, they decided to use the story of Tane-nui-a-Rangi’s ascent to the heavens to bring back the three kits of knowledge. The completed gateway was presented by the inmates and Department of Corrections staff to Albany Junior High School representatives including principal Mike Jackson at the prison on Monday.
