Mon., March. 9, 2009 HONESDALE, WAYNE COUNTY- There was an outpouring of emotion in Wayne County Sunday as people remembered Sheriff Charles Morelli. He died last week after serving his community for decades. It was easy to see the impact he's made by the sheer number of people who attended his viewing this afternoon it was a tribute to a man who gave his life to his community. Hundreds waited in line Sunday outside the Hessling Funeral Home in Honesdale to pay their respects to Wayne County Sheriff Charles Morelli. The 67-year-old died Wednesday after an illness. Friend and Corrections Officer Earl Rine said, Charlie was a man who would give you the shirt off his back. He was a dear friend." Morelli's fellow deputies and former corrections officers stood at attention, wearing black bands symbolizing the loss. These men say there was no one more caring. He always went out, got donuts for the guys, coffee, he was just a great guy," added Rine. Besides serving as sheriff, Morelli also served as a corrections officer at the old Wayne County Prison. State Senator Lisa Baker said, He was a tremendous asset to this community. He was just a voice for the people and public safety was just at the forefront in his mind." Read more.
