The Australian privately owned and operated G4S Port Phillip Prison in Melbourne was recently awarded the prestigious Standards Australia AS4801 Accreditation for both achieving and maintaining internationally recognized levels of workplace health and safety and legislative compliance.

Located in the industrial sector of Melbourne’s western suburbs, the maximum security prison, under the management of G4S, a world leader in international security, has capacity to accommodate up to 765 male prisoners. Its chief responsibilities include the management and administration of prisoners sentenced into custody. The facility operates with a staff establishment of 350 personnel, together with five on-site partners who provide services in catering, education, asset maintenance, drug and alcohol counseling and medical care, all aimed at assisting in long-term rehabilitation.

On 25 January 2008, Port Phillip Prison created history by becoming the first Australian prison to have its Occupational Health & Safety Management System accredited to the internationally recognized Australian /New Zealand Standard 4801 (AS/NZS 4801).

Accreditation was a huge achievement for the prison and G4S and is indicative of their long-standing commitment to health and safety. It also brought to an end a tireless campaign which commenced in 2002, and set the future foundations for a united and effective Occupational Health and Safety management system.

‘Port Phillip Prison is an extremely complex and diverse maximum security prison and achieving this level of recognition is a fantastic effort and a real accomplishment for all of those involved in the process,‘ Port Phillip Prison Occupational Health & Safety Committee Chairman Colin Rosewarne said. ‘The multi-tiered Victorian OH&S legislation is already amongst the most stringent in the world, but the decision by the company, management and staff to raise our standards of safety still further and aim for full AS 4801 accreditation, and then achieve that, makes Port Phillip Prison the first Australasian prison at any level of security to achieve this level of accreditation’ .

The accreditation will be matched by an ongoing commitment to improve OH&S practice at the prison even further, ensuring that all legal, ethical, moral and industrial considerations are addressed. In the long term, the system is expected to result in a reduction in workplace injuries and illness, and fewer hazards.

The system will continue to be monitored and will be subject to ongoing annual reviews by an independent audit firm, in order to ensure continuing compliance with AS/NZS 4801.
