Sheriff wants to house Fed Inmates

Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez has come up with something she believes will allow her to avoid layoffs or other serious budget cuts this year.

She is proposing to generate $13 million with a contract to house about 550 federal prisoners in the new south tower jail that's about to open.

But County Commissioner John Wiley Price told her to go back to the drawing board.

"I've talked to her about that and as far as I'm concerned it's off the table," Price said.

Valdez has to find savings of 10 percent in her $135 million budget this year like everyone else to help close a major county budget shortfall that's expected to top $60 million.

But housing contract prisoners is a dream, not a reality, according to Price.

The last time the county jail housed as many as 500 federal prisoners was in the early 1990s, said Price, who's been in office since 1985.

"They're gonna have to come up with some cuts. That's not acceptable," he said.

INS (now called U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) canceled its contract years ago with Dallas County and took its prisoners to some small towns that charged less. Read more.
