| Inmates blamed for sewer problems |

By AP updated 10:15 a.m. ET, Wed., March. 11, 2009 roanoke,va - Pittsylvania County officials say they will cooperate with Chatham in solving the clogged sewer line problem the town manager believes is caused by inmates at the county jail flushing sheets, trustee uniforms, mop heads and other items down the toilets. Chatham Town Manager Mike Jones, who first presented the problem to Town Council on Monday night, said the town has been working on clearing the blockage in the sewer pipe at the intersection of Route 57 and Main Street for two weeks at a cost of about $25,000. He also told council members it was a recurring problem that has gone on for years. Sheriff Mike Taylor said Tuesday he only found out about the problem the middle of last week, and is going to do everything he can to help solve it. “I know from time to time they (inmates) try to flush stuff down the toilets, but I didn’t know it had been going on this long,” Taylor said. “We’re going to find the problem and we’re going to fix it.” The sheriff also said he would like to see the items that were found lodged in the sewer pipe, which Jones said has included broken up mop or hoe handles, as well as strips cut from bed sheets. “I don’t know where they’d (inmates) be getting hoe handles and mop handles,” Taylor said. Lt. J. Crews, who helps oversee the jail, said everything at the jail is inventoried. Jones said one solution would be to put a trap on the sewer line coming out of the jail, so any non-biodegradable items that clogged the line would only affect the jail. The problem with that, he said, is that installing such a trap could cost as much as $75,000 in equipment and manpower. Read more.
