By Caroline Alexander March 12 (Bloomberg) -- An Iraqi journalist was sentenced to three years in prison for throwing shoes at former President George W. Bush. Muntazer al-Zaidi, 30, appeared at the Iraq Central Criminal Court in Baghdad today and pleaded not guilty to charges of aggression against a foreign leader during an official visit, President Jalal Talabani’s Patriotic Union of Kurdistan said on the party’s Web site. The correspondent for Al-Baghdadiya, an Iraqi-owned television station based in Cairo, threw his shoes at Bush on Dec. 14 during a news conference in the offices of Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki. Bush ducked and wasn’t struck. Al-Zaidi said he wasn’t trying to kill Bush and that he threw the shoes because he was unable to control his emotions when he saw the man who ordered the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He was criticized for his actions by the Iraqi government, while winning acclaim in the Arab world and triggering similar incidents around the globe. In Arab culture, throwing shoes is an expression of disrespect. Al-Zaidi’s trial opened Feb. 19 and was adjourned to allow the court time to determine the nature of Bush’s trip. Iraqi law specifies a sentence of as many as 15 years for attacking a foreign leader during an official visit, while insulting a foreign head of state carries a sentence of at least two years or a fine.
