Fri, 13 Mar 2009 Michael Wallace used to be proud to wear his Corrections uniform. He still has a current badge but was stood down last year as a guard at Wellington's Rimutaka Prison. “I just want the truth to be told,” says Wallace. “I want them to be open and honest about the things that are happening in our prisons.” Wallace found himself in trouble when he started raising concerns about drug use and assaults at Rimutaka Jail. He was put under investigation for corruption. He says his experiences at Rimutaka are similar to the kinds of things in the Australian report into Auckland's prisons. It describes lax security, shortages of guards, prisoner unruliness and poor hygiene as problems. Wallace says the report does not surprise him. “I’ve seen marijuana. I’ve seen P use in there,” says Wallace. He also claims to have seen staff attack prisoners and then found himself told to shut up. “I've seen attacks where I've been told it never happened and to me,” states Wallace. “I know it happened. I saw it happen.” Wallace's two years at Rimutaka has left him disillusioned with the department. “It’s a joke,” continues Wallace. “It’s sad and to be honest I feel ashamed to have worked for them.” Read more.
