Report states guards failed to notice Sask. prison escape By THE CANADIAN PRESS REGINA -- A new report into how six prisoners facing violent charges managed to escape from a Saskatchewan jail paints a picture of ineffective staff and a failing building. The report, which examined how the prisoners broke out of the Regina Provincial Correctional Centre last August, says the men toiled away at their escape plan for months and dozens of workers failed to see what was happening. UNDETECTED "Inmates on Unit 3A went about the business of digging out through the wall undetected by less than vigilant staff for a period of approximately four months," says the report. "The (external investigation team) accepts that an inmate or a group of inmates can deceive a corrections worker on a particular shift; but cannot accept that an entire corridor of inmates can deceive at least 87 different corrections workers ... and engineer an escape of this magnitude." According to a chronology of events, the prisoners began to dig the hole at the end of a corridor farthest from the staff office. They used a modified nail clipper to remove the grill on a heating register. With other makeshift tools, they were able to cut and tear the steel backplate of the register and expose the exterior brick wall.
