Correctional Health Care: Translating Principles to Practice

Mark your calandars: Flamingo Las Vegas ¨ April 4-7

Professionals who work with youth in the juvenile justice system will receive targeted education at this year’s Updates conference. NCCHC’s Juvenile Health Committee has helped to develop a new preconference seminar, Essentials of Correctional Juvenile Health Care, taking place Sunday, April 5, from 8 am to 11:30 am.

Now more than ever, correctional health care professionals must employ innovative strategies to address a vast array of complex issues. To equip them to meet the challenge, the Updates conference will provide a superior program that enables attendees to hone their skills, augment their knowledge and engage with colleagues. More than 1,000 professionals are expected to attend this event to explore options for effective treatment, education, prevention and research.

On Saturday and Sunday, preconference seminars will provide a comprehensive look at NCCHC’s standards for jail, prison, juvenile and mental health care, as well as other fundamental topics. Registration for the conference is not required to participate in the seminars.

Juveniles require services that address their immediate needs but also anticipate their developmental, physical and behavioral changes as well as aid their rehabilitation as they move through the correctional system. The Juvenile Health Care seminar will discuss essential topics such as the 72- hour intake process; medical and mental health needs assessment; strategies for detecting and managing sexually transmitted diseases; suicide prevention; and integration back in the community. The seminar will be led by juvenile health experts Joseph Penn, MD, CCHP, acting director of mental health services, UTMB Correctional Managed Care, Texas Youth Commission, and NCCHC’s board chair, and Michelle Staples-Horne, MD, CCHP, medical director, Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice, and board president of the Society of Correctional Physicians.

On Monday and Tuesday, concurrent sessions will feature more than 50 educational programs that address a broad range of topics in the general areas of medical care, nursing, cost containment, legal issues, mental health care, juvenile services, research and much more.

The conference also features an extensive commercial exhibition where attendees may visit dozens of suppliers to learn about the latest products and services available to assist them in their day-to-day responsibilities.
