| Sheriff faces layoff of 10 COs |

By XENIA — The Greene County Sheriff’s Office informed 10 corrections officers this week that they will be laid off in a month if another solution to a budget shortfall can’t be found. “This is the last step we wanted to go to, but we were getting to that time where we needed to do something,” said Jail Administrator Maj. Eric Prindle. Countywide budget cuts have hit the Sheriff’s Office especially hard. While most departments were told to cut budgets by four percent, the sheriff’s office must make their budget seven percent smaller than in 2008. Compounding the problem is the fact that 27, instead of 26, paydays fall within 2009. Each pay period costs the department $330,000. The department is negotiating with the officers’ union to see if the last pay period and another employee benefit payout can be moved into 2010. If not, the 10 layoffs will almost certainly happen, with more layoffs possible, Prindle said. In other efforts to correct the budget shortfall, the department is applying for federal stimulus money and other money saving measures have already been taken, Prindle said. There is freeze on hiring, pay raises and on purchasing new vehicles, some non-union employees have taken pay cuts and lost their department-provided cell phones, overtime has been curtailed and a 60-inmate pod at the Adult Detention Center has been closed, Prindle said. The department’s budget was $13.7 million in 2008, and it currently employs 163 people, 100 deputies, 38 corrections officers and 25 administrative staffers.Read more.
