By JOHN MCMILLAN - Advocate River parishes bureau DONALDSONVILLE — The new 300-bed expansion that more than doubles the capacity of the Ascension Parish Jail opened Friday. The 25,000-square-foot facility, which was finished on time, came in about $1 million under budget, Parish President Tommy Martinez said. Both Martinez and Sheriff Jeff Wiley cited the expansion as an example of government agencies working together. Wiley noted the much-needed facility was financed without additional taxes. Parish government issued $12.5 million in revenue bonds to pay for the expansion project. Martinez said the cost of the jail was approximately $11.5 million. The $1 million not spent on construction would be used to pay down the bonded indebtedness, he said. The new facilities will allow women prisoners to be brought back from St. Charles Parish, Wiley said, which will save money. Additionally, the Sheriff’s Office and parish government will share revenue obtained from housing state and federal prisoners. The state pays $24.39 a day for each state prisoner the parish incarcerates, and the federal government pays $38 a day for each of its prisoners housed in Ascension. Wiley said he expects to house a minimum of 100 state and federal prisoners. That revenue will be shared with parish government on a 50-50 basis after expenses, he said. With the new expansion opened, the jail can house 564 prisoners, said Warden Bobby Webre, who served as master of ceremonies at the opening of the prison.Read more.
