Casey Newton - The Arizona Republic Officials have a new plan for cleaning up the mess at the Capitol: Make prisoners do it. In a cost-cutting move, the state is considering using inmates for custodial services at the Statehouse. The proposal, which is under review, would turn convicts into custodians at the Arizona House and Senate, among other buildings at the Capitol. "Every other option has been explored, and this is literally an absolutely last resort," said Alan Ecker, spokesman for the Department of Administration. The idea has raised eyebrows among lawmakers. On Thursday, Sen. Rebecca Rios, D-Apache Junction, told her colleagues that she worried about sharing the building with jailbirds turned janitors. The move comes in the wake of layoffs at the Department of Administration that will see 20 full-time custodians laid off. The department slashed 138 jobs last month in the wake of a $1.6 billion budget adjustment earlier this year. Ecker couldn't say when a final decision would be made or how much money the move could save. He said that if prisoners are brought in to clean, they will be placed under strict supervision. DUI offenders already provide custodial services at the Departments of Corrections and Administration through an existing agreement, Corrections Department spokesman Nolberto Machiche said.
