Those who work in the state Division of Corrections have their fingers crossed that a promised $1,000 pay increase will remain in the new state budget despite ongoing adjustments.

Governor Manchin still has the money in his proposed budget. It's the third and final year of a plan to increase the pay of Corrections employees by $5,000. The workers received $2,000 raises each of the last two years.

Rubenstein says being a correctional officer in a state prison is a tough job, but they tell potential candidates during recruiting efforts that it's worth it. "This is an admirable career and we have excellent training and excellent orientation," Rubenstein said. "We are looking for people who like a challenge." Read more.
