An officer involved in the alleged sexual assault of a Vermont inmate in his cell at a Kentucky prison has been fired, said an official for the privately operated prison. "The employee was terminated for a policy violation," Steve Owen of Corrections Corporation of America said Monday. Owen said a second officer placed on administrative leave after the incident Thursday night was allowed to return to work Monday after it was determined he had not violated any prison rules. Vermont Corrections Commissioner Stephen Gold said Monday that the inmate was inside a segregated detention unit at the Marion, Ky., facility when a video surveillance camera recorded an officer entering the man's cell and leaving 10 minutes later. "That in itself is an infraction," Gold said. "The correctional officer was not supposed to go into that cell by himself. He was not supposed to be on that unit by himself." Gold confirmed he was told the inmate might have been handcuffed at the time the sexual assault took place. "There is an allegation that the correctional officer went in there and handcuffed him, but I'm not sure if that's been borne out by the investigation at this point, so that's unclear," he said. Gold said the inmate's family had been notified. He said that his department had decided against returning the inmate to a Vermont jail. Gold sent an aide to the Marion jail over the weekend. He said he was satisfied that jail officials and the Kentucky State Police are thoroughly investigating the case. Owen, representing the prison company, said he was not aware of other allegations involving the officer or similar incidents with other prisoners. |
