Travis County, TX - Maybe they're dressing the inmates in faux Crocs at the Travis County Jail because it's tough to make a shank out of rubber. The guests of the county really are being issued a Croc-style shoe at the county lockups both downtown and out at Del Valle. "It's a bunch of Croc, is exactly what it is," joked Travis County Sheriff Greg Hamilton. The reason the inmates are being switched to Croc knockoffs for footwear instead of real Crocs? I looked up Crocs online, and they run $40 or $50. So putting these folks in real Crocs would be like giving them Louis Vuitton bags. The Crocs the inmates are wearing cost $5.95 a pair, Hamilton said, and they're made in China. "They look like the real thing," said sheriff's office spokesman Roger Wade. "They offer arch support. The inmates say they're cooler (than the canvas shoes they're replacing). They breathe better, and they don't stink." Perhaps another reason they're giving them Croc-like footwear in jail is that it would be tougher to break out of the joint in Crocs. Ever try to climb barbwire in plastic shoes? So how do the inmates like their new shoes? Probably not as much as they'd like a file or a dirty magazine. But Wade said that while testing out the near-Crocs on the inmates, there were only a couple of complaints. "One of them was they couldn't play basketball very well in those Crocs," Wade said. Some inmates play basketball during their recreation time. Hamilton said the b-ball complaints came from the jail's "Michael Jordans, and that's only a few, that want to get up and dunk and all the fancy stuff." Though they might not be real good for hoops, the Croc knockoffs are cheaper than the old blue and white canvas shoes the inmates used to wear. And they're easier to keep in good condition. "They last seven times longer (than the canvas shoes), and they're easier to clean and disinfect," Wade said. Also, the fake Crocs don't cost as much. "We're figuring the first-year savings is $22,441," Wade said. Another good thing about a Croc-style shoe is that it's hard to kick the tar out of somebody in a jail riot while dressed in Crocs. For those occasions, I imagine the inmates would prefer a pointy-toed boot. Read more. If link has expired, check the website of the article's original news source. |
