| Richland fund transfer saves 10 deputies |

By LISA MILLER • News Journal • March 17, 2009 MANSFIELD -- Once faced with laying off 25 deputies and staff members, Richland County Sheriff Steve Sheldon may see that number shrink to eight if the county is able to move more money into law enforcement salaries. Advertisement After an executive session Monday morning to review the layoff situation, Richland County commissioners transferred $300,000 from the jail budget to salaries to help keep 10 deputies from being laid off Thursday. The sheriff had already rescinded three layoff notices Friday after grant money helped save three positions -- two deputies, including one sergeant, and one records employee. That left the scheduled layoffs at 11, but the board told the sheriff Monday it may be able to move another $100,000 to cover a maximum of three deputies. That would drop the layoffs to eight, a figure contingent on the board coming to a consensus with sheriff's department business manager Adrienne Hoover and jail administrator Maj. Roger Paxton on a new jail budget. Last year, commissioners approved the 2008 general fund budget on a quarterly basis while working to get a handle on the cost of running the jail that opened last spring. The city of Mansfield has a deal with the county to use 80 beds for $1.4 million a year. Commissioner Ed Olson said the original jail operating budget was based on 269 beds, but a verbal agreement last fall allowed for 220 beds. Read more.
