By TIMBERLY ROSS Wednesday, Mar 18, 2009 - OMAHA, Neb. - The inmate who was fatally shot after escaping a Lincoln corrections center had served 25 years in prison and was set to be paroled as early as next year. The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services identified him as 45-year-old Earl C. Russell. Lincoln police spokeswoman Katie Flood said Russell escaped from the Community Corrections Center on Wednesday morning. He was spotted by police about 1:45 p.m. A chase ensued, and Russell crashed his vehicle near Haymarket Park, home of Lincoln's minor league baseball team. Flood said Russell then threatened officers with a knife, and an officer shot him. Russell was serving to 22- to 71-year sentence for first-degree assault and robbery out of Douglas County and first-degree arson out of Lancaster County. According to the corrections department, he began his sentence in February 1984 and a parole hearing was set for next February. Russell was reported missing at 11:35 a.m. Wednesday. The corrections department said he was not present for morning count, although staff had spoken with him earlier. The Community Corrections Center in Lincoln can accommodate up to 200 inmates participating in work-release programs. Most are nearing release or parole dates. Read more.
