Officials said they were not certain when a lockdown at the maximum-security Pendleton Correctional Facility in Indiana would be lifted. The prison about 30 miles northeast of Indianapolis remained on indefinite lockdown for a fourth day Monday, a precaution ordered in response to an anonymous warning of assaults and an escape attempt. Indiana Department of Correction spokeswoman Pam Pattison said prison officers had to search all the cells in the 1,675-inmate prison, and she was not sure how long the searches would take. "There's a lot of personal property to search," she said. The lockdown ordered by Superintendent Zettie R. Cotton took effect before dawn Friday after all inmates were in their cells. The prison received an anonymous phone call April 24 about plans for a disturbance on the first or second Tuesday in May, Pattison said. The lockdown also followed organized protests by some inmates over conditions at the prison. |
