| SHERIFF CABRAL RECEIVES “WOMEN OF COLOR: CHANGING OUR WORLD” AWARD |

Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral was recently honored as a “Women of Color: Changing Our World” award recipient. Given by the Prince Hall Grand Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, Sheriff Cabral was honored along with twenty other women of color who were chosen from a diverse field of accomplishment including elected office, education, business, religious service, and community activism. The awards were presented as part of the organization’s Black History Month celebration because, according to a statement issued by Brother Anthony I. Jakes, Sr. – Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Prince Hall Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star – the recipients’ “sacrifices have paved the foundation to allow women of color to continue making this world a better place.” “Over the years, it has been part of our mission at the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department to promote diversity within our workplace and to extend our services externally throughout Suffolk County in an effort to increase public health and safety in our neighborhoods,” said Sheriff Cabral. “I am very grateful for my selection as an honoree for this award,” Sheriff Cabral continued. “I would like to thank the Prince Hall Grand Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star for this honor and I would like to congratulate all of the honorees.” Other award recipients included: Irene Carrington, Community Advocate; Senator Sonia Chang-Diaz, 2nd Suffolk District; Barbara J. DeVaughn, WGM OES, Distinguished Leader; State Representative Linda Dorcena Forry, 12th Suffolk District; State Representative Gloria L. Fox, 7th Suffolk District; Carolyn Johnson, Humanitarian; Dr. Carol Johnson, Superintendent of the Boston Public Schools; Sadie Langford, Community Advocate; Cynthia Loesch, President of the Codman Square Neighborhood Council; Elaine Maddox, Educator; Sandra Malloy Blake, Educator; Karen Payne, President of the NAACP, Boston Branch; Bessie Pittman of the Mattapan Civic Improvement Association; Minnie Scales of Citizens Bank; Shirley Shillingford, President of the Caribbean Carnival Association; Denise Simmons, Mayor of the City of Cambridge; State Representative Marie St. Fleur, 5th Suffolk District; Dr. Azzie Young, CEO of MCHC; and Bishop Nellie Yarborough of Mount Calvary Holy Church. The Prince Hall Grand Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star is a branch of the Freemasons – believed to be the largest fraternal organization in the world that both men and women can join – and is located in Grove Hall, Dorchester. |
