Branchville - Three inmates who escaped from southern Indiana's Branchville Correctional Facility are considered dangerous. The inmates are identified as 49-year-old Christopher Marshall, who's serving a 50-year sentence for dealing cocaine; 59-year-old Jerry Sargent, who's serving a 50-year sentence for robbery and criminal confinement; and 31-year-old Bobby Cockerell, serving a 20-year sentence for burglary. Police say the men were last accounted for at the facility around 8:15 CDT Friday morning. Marshall and Sargent were assigned to the welding shop at the facility and are believed to have assaulted a maintenance worker prior to the escape. The method of escape is still under investigation. You have no idea what goes on inside a prison until you have been working there for a while. We have no control over the sanctions that are given to these criminals. If it were up to us we would cut there t.v. and just feed them bologna sandwiches for every meal. but its not that easy. We do what we are told from downtown. It is all the people in the government offices fighting for there rights and saying the prisoners get treated unfairly in prison. Oh and just for your information the wonderful governor in an effort to cuts costs has taken away the sanctions we could hand down to them. We are no longer allowed to take there good time. So basically they can attack any staff or do anything they want and won't get basically anything for it. So saying that we are not doing our job as correctional professionals really makes me upset. You don't understand that there are times when there are 200 prisoners and only 1 maybe 2 staff members there. Now tell me if its 200 to 1 who is gonna win that. In this case there were 2 prisoners with access to tools and it is obvious the maintenance worker didn't stand a chance. And for you too judge a man who is laying in his own blood dying because he was working at a prison to protect people like you is really really not cool. If there weren't any correctional staff you WOULD not sleep at night. All the murderers and rapists would be running around like it was disneyland. Now I will agree that there are staff that are lazy. It is in every job field you look, there are lazy people thats just it. But trust me, there are a heck of a lot of hard working Correctional Professionals out there. The public has no idea what any of us go through on a daily basis...we deal with the worst of the worst of society...they plot, they plan, they carry out...I worked in a men's prison for 13 years, I am now in a County Jail working, and let me tell you, they get away with alot because they have rights, more rights than us workers do. We are limited on what discipline we can do when they break the rules. We put our lives on the line everyday when we walk into the prisons and jails we work in...it takes a very special type of person to work in this environment, it is not a job just everyone can do. It is mentally, emotionally and physically exhausting work and we don't get a whole lot of thanks or recognition for the good job that we do! How many of you out there want to work with these dangerous people? Do you think they are in jail for breaking a tea cup? We work with people that have done minor things from Public Intox all the way up to major crimes such as the Murderers! Granted there are a few employees in every facility that are known as "dirty staff"...they will do just about anything for a buck. Don't judge the majority of us by the few idiots! Your comments make it look like it was this maintenance Staff's fault he got clobbered over the head with a hammer if that is in fact what happened...just how frigging stupid are you to think that this person agreed to have his head bashed in so these guys could escape????
