Schuyler Town Talk: hould Stanley Warne find himself in need of a hobby, he might want to consider competitive shooting. Somewhere there has to be a pistol team in need of his ability with a handgun. The 45-year-old Warne, an Ovid resident working as a mechanic at the state's Five Points Correctional Facility north of Ovid, had scores of 91 and above in seven different classifications. In fact, Warne, firing a Model 40 Glock handgun as part of the basic correction officer's course, shot a perfect score with his right hand and just missed doing the same thing with his left hand. Warne is no stranger to shotguns, but handguns are another story. A day on the range was his first ever with a handgun. Along with his completion of the basic officer's course and the presentation to him of his diploma at the Seneca County Law Enforcement Center in Romulus was a certificate noting his success with the handgun. Warne has no plans to set aside his job as a mechanic for a career as a correction officer or competitive shooter. "This is just a hobby for me," he said of his decision to take the correction officer's course. As families, graduates and various law enforcement officials consumed a light lunch following graduation ceremonies, Warne noted that the role of the correction officer is nothing new to him. His wife, Susan, one of those on hand for the graduation ceremonies, has been with the Seneca County Sheriff's Department as a corrections officer for nearly a year. While she works the day shift, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., her husband can be found at Five Points Correctional Facility from 3-11 p.m. "We hardly ever see each other," Stanley Warne said. Of the 10-member class, there were five Seneca County residents - Bobbi Jo Bell and Shawn VanGee, both of Waterloo, Steven Picchi of Seneca Falls, Daniel Bell of Romulus and Warne. Ontario County was represented by Christopher Jones of Geneva and Nelson Alvarez of Farmington. Yates County residents included Daniel Davis of Canandaigua, Stephen Kriegar and Derek Christensen, both of Penn Yan.Read more.
