Despite budget crunch, sheriff says he needs 8 more detention clerks With Madison County facing a $2 million budget shortfall, Sheriff Blake Dorning knows it's a bad time to ask for a budget increase. But Dorning said he needs more workers - eight detention clerks, minimum - to safely run an expanded metro jail scheduled to open in late June or early July. "The building is designed that it requires more personnel," he said Thursday. "But when there's no money to hire those personnel, what do you do? The county commissioners can't just pull them out of the air." Dorning, a Republican, said he will make an "absolute bare bones" budget request for getting the new 900-bed jail tower up and running. Even so, commissioners may be hard-pressed to come up with extra dollars for a jail system that already chews up $15 million a year. With tax collections slumping, the county is trying to trim spending - not add to it. Last Monday, commissioners ordered an immediate hiring freeze, limited overtime pay, and told county workers not to expect a merit raise for 2009. "The jail expenses are going to be an issue, obviously," Commission Chairman Mike Gillespie said Thursday. "We'll do the best we can. Hopefully, the measures we just took will reduce the cost in other areas, and hopefully revenue will pick back up." Read more.
