| Tough times ahead for Winnebago County staff |

WINNEBAGO COUNTY(WREX) - By the first week of April about 500 Winnebago County employees will either face unemployment or reduced work schedules. By cutting staff that reduces down the county's budget by $6.25 million across all departments. That will happen by eliminating 70 positions most of those are upper management employees. Hundreds of other employees will cut back their hours and take unpaid furloughs. But there is one department the county insists should not take the cuts. Winnebago County Board Chair Scott Christiansen makes it clear that patrol and corrections officers won't take a hit. At a press conference today Winnebago County Sheriff Dick Meyers told 13 News, "Burglaries still happen, thefts and robberies still happen, people still peddle drugs and we can't, yea know that doesn't take a holiday." The sheriff's department will make adjustments in other areas to make sure public safety is up to par. Right now there are 19 vacant jobs in the sheriff's department. Those won't be filled. Employees will also take furlough days and some sergeants and detectives will get demoted and take a pay cut. Meyers says, "Our priority was an officer that sits in a squad car that handles the calls for service and delivers law enforcement services to this public. Then the corrections officer books the people in the jail and maintains the safety inside the correctional facility." Read more.
